Storm damage reported in Hillsboro area

Hillsboro was hit early Tuesday morning with torrential rains and winds gusting up to 70 mph.

According to Police Chief Dan Kinning, the storm started around 5 a.m. and came from west of Hillsboro.

Kinning said crews from the fire department were called about 5:30 a.m. because of power lines that were down in the 200 block of North Lincoln.

"When we arrived, you could smell wood burning," Kinning said.

Power lines were also reported down in the 200 block of South Jefferson, apparently caused by a tree limb falling on them.

Kinning said city crews were busy most of the morning cleaning up the limbs from the streets.

"Most of the limbs were cleaned up," Kinning said. "Only those tree limbs that were too large to haul away will have to be cut."

Kinning said there were no signs of physical damage nor any reports of vehicle or structural damage.

City administrator Steve Garrett also said city and electrical crews were out early that morning to pick up limbs and repair the damage.

"There was not a lot of damage," Garret said. "By the beginning of the business day, (8 or 9 a.m.) all the electrical problems were fixed."

Garrett reported crews were picking up limbs the majority of the day on Tuesday and were still picking up limbs as of Wednesday.

Garrett also said the rains put a halt to the North Main Street project for a few days.

"If we get a couple of days to dry out, we can get back to the project," he said.
