Goessel High School girls split league games defeating Pretty Prairie 46-32 and losing to Sedgwick 47-55.
On Friday, the Bluebirds trailed in the first and second quarters, but dominated the third quarter. After trailing 20-21 at half-time, the Goessel girls outscored the Bulldogs 16-2 in the third quarter and Pretty Prairie would not get closer than 10 points in the fourth quarter.
On Friday, Stucky scored 19, Goerzen 16, Lindsey Unruh eight, Katie Schroeder two and Shannon Schmidt one.
On Tuesday, the girls were skunked in the first quarter 17-0 as Sedgwick played a methodical offense, using their 6'2" Rochelle Busenitz as a decoy and allowing other girls to score close shots.
In the second quarter, Busenitz scored on lob passes inside, but Goessel began pecking away at the lead.
Just before the half ended, Darla Funk hit a three-pointer and Melinda Stucky tossed in two three-pointers (one from 30 feet at the buzzer) to cut a 20-point lead down to 18-27 for the half-time score.
Sedgwick led 42-30 and the end of the third quarter and Goessel tried to pull some magic during the last league game of the season.
Stucky scored 10 straight points against Sedgwick's three, Unruh sneaked in and took a stolen pass all the way for a lay-up, and Goerzen hit a two-pointer to get Goessel within three at 47-44.
The Cardinals scored three freethrows, and Goerzen hit a three to pull within three again with 12.9 seconds left. Sedgwick sank two more freethrows to ice the game and won 55-47.
Goessel's record is now 10-9 overall, and they finished 6-7 in league play.
Goessel will be at home on Friday with Ell-Saline and then will be competing in the 1A regional tournament with the first game at home on Tuesday.
