Swimmers finish season at league meet
Nine and a half hours — that's a long time to spend in the sweltering Kansas summer heat.
But that's exactly what the Hillsboro swim team did this past Saturday at the Mid-Kansas Swim League championship meet, held in Council Grove.
And when the final laps were over, the host team came out on top. Council Grove won the meet with a final score of 307, beating out Peabody by just two points.
The final results were as follows: Council Grove 307, Peabody 305, Lindsborg 243, Marion 202, Hillsboro 182, Abilene 174, Hesston 166, Herington 0, Moundridge 0.
Although the Hillsboro team came in fifth, 33 team members had individual best times, according to head coach Mary K. Humber.
"In the championship meet, each team enters their top three swimmers in each event," Humber said. "Considering we were missing 10 of our top swimmers, I am very happy that we came in fifth."
As the day got longer, many swimmers from other teams left early, but Hillsboro's hung around, which helped them pull from sixth place to fifth, Humber said.
"(Assistant coach) Matt and I really appreciate the kids, their attitudes and their endurance," Humber said.
The swim team awards picnic is Thursday night.
