Sylvia Goertz

Sylvia Goertz, 81, of Goessel died Feb. 6, 2002, at Bethesda Home in Goessel.

Born Sept. 11, 1920, in rural Hillsboro, she was the daughter of Edmund and Agatha (Schmidt) Hiebert.

On May 7, 1941, at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, she married Jacob Schmidt. He died in 1968.

On May 10, 1975, at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, she married Arthur Goertz. He survives of Goessel.

She lived in the Hillsboro area until her second marriage when she moved to rural Walton. Later she moved to Goessel and recently to Bethesda Home.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.

Survivors include her husband; sons Archie Schmidt of rural Newton, and Lonnie Schmidt and Ivan Schmidt, both of rural Hillsboro; stepsons John Goertz of Kansas City, Donald Goertz of Newton, and Delbert Goertz of Maize; daughters Agatha Duerksen of rural Hillsboro and Ilona Abrahams of rural Newton; step daughter Betty Cozad of Wichita; brothers Ervin Hiebert of Halstead and John Hiebert of Beatrice, Neb.; sisters Velma Flaming of Hutchinson, Anna Mae Janzen of Hesston, and Lela Goertz of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and a number of step great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church near Goessel with Rev. Corey Miller officiating. Burial will be at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the Alexanderwohl Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 9 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home in Goessel. The family will greet friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established with Bethesda Home.
