Tabor announces Learning in Retirement schedule

The Tabor College Learning in Retirement program will begin Thursday, Sept. 26, when Ferne and Clarence Hiebert of Hillsboro share highlights from their lives both here and abroad.

Coffee will be served from 9:40 to 10:10 a.m. preceding the first meeting.

Future sessions include:

Oct. 3: "From Ships to Sail Boats: Aging with Spirit." Nationally-known master storyteller, Lynn Miller of Bluffton, Ohio, will make sure retirement is never thought of in the same way again. Marcella Mohn, recently-retired Tabor secretary, will also share of her three decades with the 60+ program.

Oct. 10: "A Man Works from Sun to Sun, A Woman's Work Is Never Done." Kansas Humanities speaker, Phillip Thomas of Wichita, will analyze the daily chores and pastimes of Kansas' men, women and children around the turn of the century.

Oct. 17: "What's New for You in Hillsboro." Jeanne Rziha, RN, of Tampa will demonstrate some of the cutting-edge equipment available at The Health Post in Hillsboro, including scanners for bone density, metabolic rate and cardiac problems. Lorrie Campbell, DO, who recently joined Hillsboro Family Practice Clinic, will also be introduced.

Oct. 24: "From Trains to Books." Janet Marler, Marion city librarian, will speak of the successful transformation of a decaying depot into a modern public library. Jim Elliott, Tabor's vice president for advancement, will also say a few words.

Oct 31: "Going 60 on the Road of Life." Raelene Fendall of Newborg, Ore., formerly of Hillsboro, will share a look back and forward as one who has recently reached the age-60 milestone.

Nov. 7: "Color Trends of the Past." Widely-sought-after speaker Elda Martens of Fairview, Okla., will share fascinating stories illustrated with quilts from the turn of the century to the present.

Nov. 14: "Northview Developmental Services' Role in Marion and Harvey Counties." Barbara Bunting, community liaison for NDS, will tell of the special work being completed in the counties.

Nov. 21: "Decorating for Christmas with Old Favorites." Janice Porter, store manager of Molly's on Main in Hillsboro, will bring nostalgic treasures from the store. Those in attendance are encouraged to bring their favorite Christmas item for display.

Dec. 5: "Music and Munchies." Seasonal music will be provided by Berean Academy, Karen Janzen, director. Carols will be led by Bruce Anthony, assistant professor of education at Tabor. Everyone is encouraged to bring finger-food for a buffet.

Older adults are invited to attend these events. All sessions will be held in Tabor's Wohlgemuth Music Education Center every Thursday morning from 10:10 to 11:15 a.m. Enrollment is $15 a person a semester, $27 per couple, or $4 a session. First-time visitors will be admitted free of charge. An optional lunch for registrants is offered for $3.
