Tabor baseball signs two athletes
Head baseball coach John Sparks has announced five additional student-athletes who have signed letters of intent to become Bluejays and participate in the Tabor College baseball program.
Travis Schafer, a 5-11, 165-pound shortstop/pitcher from Canton-Galva High School, hit .369 while earning a 4-3 record and a 2.61 ERA on the mound this spring.
John Bishop, a 6-0, 150-pound outfielder from Mesa Ridge High School, Colorado Springs, Colo., has been the starting centerfielder for 4A Mesa Ridge the past two seasons, hitting .340 as a junior.
"We are very pleased to sign both Travis and John," stated Sparks. "We feel as if both have potential to contribute to what we are attempting to accomplish here at Tabor."
Kevin Peterson, Cooper Garbe and Tristan Simmons all signed to Tabor the week of June 7.
Peterson, a 5-11, 175-pound outfielder from American River Community College, Sacramento, Calif., hit .315 with 23 RBI's and seven doubles this past season. Peterson was also a three-time All-Sacramento City pick while at Cordova High School, leading his team in average, home runs, and doubles his senior season.
Garbe, a 6-3, 160-pound, left-handed pitcher from Owasso, Okla., helped lead Owasso to consecutive 6A baseball championships both his junior and senior years as both a middle relief and starting pitcher.
Simmons, a 5-8, 150-pound left-handed pitcher/outfielder from Towanda's Circle High School, earned All-League honors his sophomore through senior years at Circle. This season Simmons posted a 3.14 ERA, while hitting .364 with 21 runs and seven doubles.
"We feel very fortunate to have signed three players of this quality in one week," said Sparks. "Peterson is an outstanding outfielder who should greatly improve both our defensive and offensive potential. In signing Garbe and Simmons we have two quality left-handed pitchers who have competed very effectively in high school."
