TABOR: Baseball squad off to 3-5 start
Opening the season Feb. 12, the Bluejay baseball team is off to a decent start, currently standing at 3-5 on the year under second-year coach John Sparks.
In the season opener Feb. 12 in Olathe against Mid-America Nazarene, the Bluejays were able to salvage a split against the Pioneers.
The Bluejays stumbled in the opener, 6-4, before bouncing back in the nightcap to edge the Pioneers, 4-3, behind Danny Douglass' pitching. Shawn Bechtold suffered his first defeat of the season in the opener.
Ten days later in the home opener against the Central Christian College, Tabor split a pair with the Tigers.
Douglass took the loss in the opener with the Tigers nipping Tabor, 7-6. Bechtold pitched a shutout for his first win of the year in the finale, 6-0.
The Bluejays spent this past weekend in Oklahoma, facing off in doubleheaders against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and Hillsdale Baptist.
On Feb. 28 in Chickasha, the USAO Drovers recorded a sweep of the Bluejays, 11-2 and 8-8.
Tabor rebounded from the Drovers' sweep the next day, splitting two with Hillsdale Baptist in Moore, falling 8-7 in the open, but winning the late game, 6-5.
The Bluejays travel today to Lindsborg for a meeting with the defending KCAC champion Bethany Swedes, with weather permitting.
Tabor travels Saturday to Liberty, Mo., to face William-Jewell before returning home March 10 for a doubleheader against Kansas Newman.
Monday's games are slated for 4 and 6 p.m. in Hillsboro.
