TABOR COLLEGE: Bluejay track teams capture ACCK titles
Maybe the Bluejay track teams should always focus on team scores instead of personal performances.
The Bluejay teams picked up a pair of first-place finishes April 12 at the ACCK meet on the campus of Bethel College in North Newton.
The men's team edged McPherson for the top spot by 13 points, 137 to 124, while the Lady Bluejays put 69 points between themselves and runner-up Kansas Wesleyan, 191-122.
The Lady Bluejays hauled in nine gold medals, and the men brought home a quartet.
"This was a one of two meets during the season that we focus on team scores and not on personal performances especially," Bluejay track coach Dave Kroeker said. "We had a great day for a track meet and really performed well as a team."
Tamara McCarren was on the rampage last season, and on Saturday, she finally picked up where she left off.
McCarren took first in both discus and shot put with heaves of 134-5 and 38-7.75, respectively. She also finished runner-up in the hammer throw with a toss of 124-9 while taking fourth in the javelin.
Lahna Daugherty snagged a pair of gold medals running the 100- and 400-meter hurdles in 17.4 and 1:14.4, respectively.
Mandi Janzen cleared a meet-high 5-2 in the high jump, and the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams each finished first.
Angela Jost ran meet bests both in 800 and 1500 meters.
Second-place finishes were highlighted by Rachel Kostner setting a school record with an 8-6 pole vault.
Highlighting the day for the men's team was Brent Brockmueller setting a personal record with a first-place hammer throw of 148 feet.
Landon Goertzen won his second-consecutive 800 meter race with a time of 2:01.
Rounding out the first place finishes were the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams.
The men snared seven silver medals on the day with Brockmueller throwing the shot put 42-9.
Caleb Stanton ran a 50.5 400 meters, and Matt Insley finished the 110-meter hurdles in 16.6 with Brian Lightner running the 400 meter hurdles in 58.9.
Will Higerd pole-vaulted 11-0, and Jeremiah Randall set a personal record throwing the discus 131'.
The final silver medal was won by the 4x400 meter relay team.
Pete Richert and Kevin Nickel each finished third in the 1500 and 5000 meter runs with times of 4:22 and 17:42, respectively. Willie Lopez threw the javelin 165'.
The Bluejays hosted their own Invitational Wednesday afternoon. Results of Wednesday's action were not available at publication time.
