TABOR COLLEGE: Tennis team takes third at league

Although they had a strong showing, the Tabor women's tennis team came up just two points shy of second place at the KCAC league tournament, held last weekend at Wichita.

Tabor gathered 46 points on the day, just two short of second-place Bethany. Bethel was the top scorer of the day with 60.

"We knew going in the conference tournament that it was going to be a dogfight with Bethany for that second regional spot," said coach Lonnie Isaac. "There is no question this was a bitter disappointment for this team, but we had a great year."

Senior Lindsay Miller also had a great tournament individually, taking first place in singles to become KCAC champion. After taking a bye in the first round, Miller defeated Southwestern's Jessica Heffner 6-2, 6-2, and Bethel's Tina Troyer 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Seniors Katherine Klepper and Nancy Isaac also had solid performances. Klepper, who held the No. 1 singles spot, took second place by defeating Friends' Stephanie Bieker 6-3, 6-2. Then the No. 1 doubles duo of Klepper and Isaac took second, defeating Friends' Bieker-Folck 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, but losing to Bethel's Brodhagen-Mowery 6-4, 7-5.

Although Tabor came in third at the league meet, they did come in second in overall totals, beating out tennis stronghold Bethany by one point.

For the season, Bethel garnered 101 points to take the top spot. Tabor had 77, with Bethany at 76, Friends at 64, Southwestern at 42.5, and Kansas Wesleyan at zero.

As this meet marks the end of the women's tennis season, Coach Isaac is sad to see his seniors go.

"We are losing three tremendous players in Katherine, Nancy, and Lindsay," Isaac said. "Not only did these players come up with some big wins over the years, but they have also been tremendous leaders on and off the court."
