Tabor cross country teams finish fifth, seventh
The 2007 cross country season began Saturday when the Bluejays traveled to Baldwin City for the Maple Leaf Invitational. Out of 10 competing schools, the Lady Bluejays finished fifth with 154 points. Park held off Mid-America Nazarene 32-43 for first place.
Liz Kleinsasser kicked off her season with a bang, finishing sixth (12.22) for a medal. Heidi Schmidt grabbed 22nd place (12.59). Leah Kopper's training during the summer paid off as she was 40th in 13:44.
The Bluejays showed depth with Shelby Miller, Jera Teselle, and Carrie Schroeder all beating the time of 14:02 for 48th, 49th, and 50th place, respectively.
"Liz had an outstanding start to her college career," coach Karol Hunt said. "Leah had a good summer of training and came into the design with a renewed desire to run. She competed really well. "It's positive for the team to have teammates who can push each other during races."
The men's team mustered a seventh place ending with 231 points as Mid-America topped the division with 27.
Zac Remboldt was the highest finisher for Tabor, speeding up by a half-minute for 31st (18:16) with Justin Ball 28/100 of a second behind him at 37th. The second-through-sixth place finishers were a battle, with all four coming in within 1:30 of each other. Caleb Schroeder was right behind Ball for 38th (19:06), and Dan Sigley and Ric Johnson were 42nd (19:26), and 45th (19:46), respectively. Johnson's time was 1:05 better than last year's.
"Zac and Ric ran well compared to last season at the Baker meet," said Hunt. "Today's meet was a good start to our season. Early competition provides beneficial feedback.
"We know where we are and the work we still need to do to peak at the end of the season."
