Tabor faculty chamber recital is Tuesday
The Tabor College faculty chamber recital, featuring the works of Carl Maria von Weber, Mikhail Glinka, and Paul Schoenfield, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel-Auditorium.
Admission is free.
Performers will include Dr. Sheila Schmitt, piano, Adrienne Dougherty, violin, Susan Mayo, cello, and Lonn Richards, clarinet. Schmitt serves as associate professor of piano and piano pedagogy at Tabor.
The first two pieces, by Weber and Glinka, are interesting, said Schmitt, because "we will be performing them with slightly different instrumentation than what was originally composed."
Weber's Trio in G Minor, Op. 63 was originally composed for the flute, cello, and piano, but the flute will be replaced with a violin at the recital. The Glinka piece will replace a bassoon part with cello.
"The sounds of the trios will be very similar to what one would expect," said Schmitt, "but by changing the instruments the technique becomes much more challenging."
The third piece, by Schoenfield, contains many familiar elements and rhythms; including blues, ragtime, spirituals, and tunes from Hollywood movies, Broadway, and more.
"It's very difficult to play and keep together," said Schmitt "It's really quite taxing on the performers' individual technique, but also demanding to the ensemble itself as well. But the overall goal with this piece is to simply enjoy the music."
