Tabor harriers compete well at Friends meet
Lady 'Jays finish sixth, men take seventh
The Tabor College cross country team was in action Saturday, competing in the Friends meet held at Lake Afton.
The women's team, led by Heidi Schmidt's 13th place time of 22:15 for a medal, took sixth place with 108 points.
The men's team took seventh out of 16 teams with 212 points.
The Southwestern Moundbuilders won both divisions easily with the women's 35 points and the men's 37.
"I really liked the effort of the women," Bluejay coach Karol Hunt said. "The times were a little off, but this course did not appear to be a fast one."
Bridgette Stevens came in eight spots behind Schmidt at 21st (22.57.) Amber Wiens was 37th (23:43) to mark the same top three finish for the second straight meet.
Tiffany Stevens won the battle to stay under 45th with a 41st place time of 23:49, a second and a place quicker than teammate Shelby Miller.
Ashley Schmidt took 44th in 23:52.
Rebekah Lockhart rounded out the women with a 62nd place time of 25:47.
The men also posted the same finish as the first meet of the season as Jeff Anenson paced the field in a 44th place time of 30:11.
A mere seven places separated the top four finishers.
Kyle Larson, Kevin Larson, and Matt Lynam battled it out for 47th, 48th, and 50th, respectively.
Kyle Larson finished the eight-kilometer race in 30:18, a second ahead of Kevin with Lynam running a 30:24.
"Jeff, Kyle, Kevin, and Matt were all close to the 30:00 mark which is positive for us on this course," said Hunt. "I was pleased with the way they battled and pushed each other."
Zac Remboldt and Richard Galli pushed each other through out the race, coming in at 67th (31:55,) and 68th (32:00,) respectively.
"Zac and Richard ran their first 8K races," Hunt said. "They learned a lot today. If they continue to work hard, they will close the gap with the upper class runners. It's going to be exciting to watch them develop.
"This was a new course for us so we did not have previous times to compare our performances to.
"This was our first opportunity to run against other conference teams so we were able to get an early view of some of the other individuals we will battle throughout the season."
Eight seconds were all that separated 84th and 85th, held by Brandon Voth and Will Higerd.
Tabor will be in action Saturday in McPherson at the Rolling Acres Golf Course.
Race time begins at 10:30 a.m. for the women and 11:15 for the men.
