Tabor interns gain real-world work experience

Internships provided real-world experience for five Tabor College students during the month of January.

At Tabor, these internships have become a requirement for certain majors and degrees. The business and communication departments have implemented this experiential technique and require students to complete an internship.

Because Tabor operates on a 4-1-4 academic schedule, some students choose to complete their internships during the month of January. Students may live in the city of their choice, completing typical eight-hour workdays at the organization as well as required college participation and credit.

Interns were placed in organizations where they earned college credit and gained work experience simultaneously.

Cory Frey, a senior from Abilene majoring in Communications Studies, completed his internship through a ministry position at Crossroads Community Church, Salina. Frey is continuing his position as leader of the youth program at this church.

Angela Kleinsasser, a senior from Wichita majoring in Communications and English, performed her internship at The Strategy Group, Wichita, a marketing and advertising firm. During her internship, she was responsible for a number of tasks, including writing, editing, press checks, customer relations and special-event planning.

Priscilla Mace, a junior Journalism major from Granby, Mo., completed her internship at an NBC television affiliate in Joplin, Mo. During her internship, she worked as a reporter, finding stories, filming, interviewing, writing scripts for newscasts and editing and filing footage.

Brian Lachman, a senior from Aurora, Colo., will graduate with a Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Management. He completed an internship with Broadlands Golf Course, Broomfield, Colo. Lachman's internship proved beneficial when he was offered a full-time employment contract upon graduation for the position of event sales manager.

"[The internship] made me more confident and gave me some good practical experience," Lachman said.

Michael Zollinger, a senior from Maize majoring in Business Management and Marketing, completed an internship at Exploration Place, Wichita, designing a database and publications as well as working in special-event planning and advertising.

"It was an eye-opener for me," Zollinger said. "I learned how valuable my Tabor education really is."
