Tabor 'Messiah' performance is Sunday

The Music Department of Tabor College will usher in the Christmas season with two performances at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.

The Tabor College Oratorio Chorus and Community Orchestra will present Handel's "Messiah" on at 7 p.m. Dec. 8.

"Our annual performance of 'Messiah' is a highly anticipated performance in this community," said Dr. Brad Vogel, associate professor of choral music. "For many, the Christmas season begins with this performance."

The performance will feature soloists Julia Schroeder, instructor of voice; Rosanne Boyd, Meade; Jessica Holler, Ingalls; Jodi Warkentin, Wichita; Erica Buller, Hesston; Jessica Eitzen, Fairview, Okla.; Brad Just, Hillsboro; and Landon Fulmer, Buhler.

The 90-voice choral group, conducted by Vogel, will be accompanied by Julie Warkentin, Wichita, on organ and Dr. Sheila Schmitt, assistant professor of piano and piano pedagogy, on harpsichord.

Later that week, the Tabor College Concert Choir, Women's Chorale, select-music-group Cantate! and the Symphonic Band will perform the Christmas Festival on Friday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m.

More than 100 students will perform a mix of well-known carols along with less-performed French carols, such as "Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella," "Pat-a-Pan" and "Il est ne."

The performance will also feature Tabor alumna Kristin Kliewer, Newton, on the oboe and harpist Jane Hawkins from the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.
