Tabor's Mai takes first at vocal competition
After placing first in the high school men's division last year, Tabor College freshman Stephen Mai of Great Bend took home more honors this weekend from the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Regional Convention in Boulder, Colo., Oct. 31 to Nov. 1.
After reaching the semi-final round in the first-year-men's classical music division, along with Hillsboro native Jonathan Regier, Mai advanced to finals and placed first.
"This is the first winner Tabor has ever had at NATS," said Dr. Brad Vogel, associate professor of choral music. "Jonathan and Stephen are two of my students, and I'm very happy for and proud of them."
Mai also reached the semi-finals in the music theater division. Marcia Pucket of Ulysses accompanied Mai and Regier.
They also had the opportunity to watch two master class sessions led by nationally recognized teachers in the fields of classical music and music theater and attend a performance of Puccini's opera La Boheme by the University of Colorado School of Music.
