Tabor students begin college with service projects
In keeping with its mission of "preparing people for a life of learning, work and service for Christ and his kingdom," groups of Tabor College freshmen, their peer advisers, and faculty members set out Saturday to serve others as part of new student orientation.
Several groups of people traveled to Wichita to work with non-profit organizations, including World Impact Village, Union Rescue Mission, His Helping Hands, a ministry of Central Christian Church, and two Ronald McDonald Houses. One site remains anonymous for security issues.
Others traveled to sites in Newton and North Newton: New Jerusalem Missions, Heartland Crisis Pregnancy Center, and Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).
For Irma Gonzalez, MCC Central States workroom supervisor, the hours donated by Tabor College are "wonderful! This is really a blessing for us."
Students cleaned vehicles, a warehouse, and windows, followed by assembling school kits. A film also was shown to demonstrate how and where the school kits will be used.
The City of Hillsboro received help with trimming trees and weeding the brick walking paths in the park. They also alphabetized the juvenile picture books and applied stickers to the video tapes at the city library.
One group traveled to Morning Star Ranch, rural Florence, to sort clothing, clean a house, paint a flatbed trailer, and demolish a trailer house for salvage materials.
