Tabor students to arrive Friday, Sunday
Fall sports athletes already here; classes start Tuesday
Hillsboro, get ready to regain a missing one-eighth of your population.
Tabor College is back in session.
Wednesday afternoon, the fall sports athletes arrived on campus for check-in, and Friday afternoon, this year's freshman class will descend upon the campus.
Classes start Tuesday.
"After a very busy summer of travel and putting the last pieces into place for this school year, it is exciting to stand at the threshold of another year," said Tabor president Larry Nikkel.
Freshman check-in is from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Student Center. Returning and transfer students can check in Sunday afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Student Development Office.
Tabor freshmen will have a full slate of activities over the weekend to help them get acquainted with their fellow classmates.
An opening session for all freshmen and their families is scheduled for Friday evening at 7:30 in the Chapel-Auditorium, said Sara Cook, public relations director at Tabor. After the hour-long session, the students will be divided up into advising groups.
Saturday morning at 8, individual advising groups will head out for service projects in Marion County and the Wichita area. Groups will be staying in the county to work at Main Street Ministries and Morningstar Ranch, Cook said.
That evening, a Mexican meal will be served in the cafeteria at 6. At 7:30, a slide show will display the various service projects of the day. That session will also feature a message by Nikkel and a performance by the CrossWise musical ministry group.
Sunday morning, Pastor Stuart Pederson of the Valleyview Bible Mennonite Brethren Church in Cimarron will deliver the message at the worship service, starting at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel-Auditorium. That afternoon, returning students arrive.
On Thursday, Sept. 5, the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a downtown reception welcoming Tabor students back for the fall semester. The Chamber plans to provide free food and drink for the event, which starts at 9 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Grand Avenue.
One hundred dollars in Chamber gift certificates will be awarded to students in drawings throughout the evening. The evening's grand prize is a microwave oven.
The public is invited.
Tabor's first all-campus convocation is set for a week later — Monday, Sept. 9, at 9:30 at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, Cook said. Dr. Howard Keim will be the speaker.
"From all indications, it appears that we will have a good freshman class with another year of strong retention of returning students," Nikkel said. "The return of students always creates a lift for the whole campus and, hopefully, for the entire community."
