Tabor to host piano festival

Tabor College will host the Newton Music Teachers Association (NMTA) Spring Piano Festival on March 15.

Participants in the festival will play piano arrangements for a panel of judges from Newton, McPherson and Lawrence. Approximately 56 area students are already registered to participate, originating primarily in Marion and Harvey counties. These students range in age from kindergartners to seniors in high school.

The Tabor College Trombone Choir will be performing two short concerts open to the contestants and their families during the festival at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The NMTA is the local organization of the Kansas Music Teachers Association, and includes piano teachers from Newton, Goessel, Hesston, Peabody, Elbing, Hillsboro, and Moundridge. The NMTA sponsors the Spring Piano Festival annually.

This is the second year that Tabor has hosted this annual event. Dr. Sheila Schmitt, assistant professor of piano and piano pedagogy, is the hostess of the event. Melody Bontrager of Newton is in charge of NMTA.
