Tabor women win McPherson track meet
The Tabor College Track teams competed Saturday at McPherson College, turning in a number of outstanding performances. The Tabor women won the meet while the men placed second.
On the men's side, outstanding performances were turned in by Smith Center junior, Matt Rorabaugh, as he tied the Tabor high jump record at 6' 9" while winning the event. Rorabaugh's jump also met the automatic qualifying height for the NAIA Outdoor national meet in Louisville, Ky. in May.
Senior Matt Lynam broke the Tabor 10,000m record set in 2002 by Kevin Nickel running the 25 laps in 36.24.97. The threesome of Halstead sophomore Trent Voth (15.71), Yuma, Ariz., freshman, Phillip Aitken (15.99), and Inman, junior Brian Lightner (16.34) swept the top three places in the 110M high hurdles.
Hillsboro freshman, Caleb Marsh won the men's pole vault at 13', and Jeff Anenson, sophomore from Mayer, Minn., took third at 12' 6".
Grant Myers, sophomore from Bakersfield, Calif., placed second in the men's hammer (123' 6") followed by Buhler, sophomore, Cody Dick with a heave of 122' 8".
On the women's side, Ashley Scherrer, sophomore from of Limon, Colo., was named female athlete of the meet after winning the women's high jump (5' 2"), placing second in the 200m dash (27.83), placing third in the long jump (16' 5 3/4") , and anchoring both the winning 4X100m and 4X400m relays.
Angela Jost also had a banner day winning the 3000m steeplechase breaking her own school record in the process (12:30.01), winning the 800m run (2:28.72), and running on the winning 4X400m relay.
Topeka freshman, Amber Wiens, won the women's 3000m run in 11:51.72. Enid, Oklahoma, freshman Heidi Schmidt, placed second in the women's 1500m run (5:16.36) and also ran on the 4X400m relay. Rachel Kostner, junior from Peabody, won the women's hammer with a throw of 108' 11".
Teams attending the meet included McPherson, Bethany, Kansas Wesleyan, Bethel, Sterling, and Ottawa.
"We really had a lot of fine early-season performances and improvements from last week and that is very positive as we go into spring break," said head coach Dave Kroeker. "This was also the last meet at Tabor for Coach Suzy Best as she and her husband are moving to Florida. Suzy has done just a terrific job over the past several years with the middle distance and distance runners.
"Eight middle distance and distance records have been broken since Suzy has been coaching at Tabor. Tabor College track and field owes her a lot as do the athletes that she trained. We will miss her positive, encouraging spirit and wish her well in her new endeavors."
The next action for the Tabor tracksters will be Saturday, April 2, at Cowley County Community College.
