Tampa news: Catholic youth attend World Youth Day

Cecelia Rziha and Raschelle Jirak left Sunday with several busloads of Catholic youth from the Wichita diocese for Toronto, Canada, where they will participate in World Youth Day and do some sightseeing. Other Marion County youth in the group were Sarah Davidson and Ramie Bina. Rose Davidson is an adult sponsor.

James Weber was honored with a party in celebration of his 12th birthday Sunday evening at the park and swimming pool in Herington. Alicia Fry of Herington was a joint honoree. Ronnie and Lisa Hanschu and Anna were hosts, along with Alicia's father. Among those attending were Monica Leihy, Sean, Isaac, Meghan, Karyn, and Mary, Paul and Edna Backhus, Tom and Lori Moldenhauer and Nikki, Frank and Anna Mae Stika, Ronnie and Anna Kristek and sons, Julie Deines and children, Gayla Deines and children, Ryan Dougherty, Dillon Whitehair, Jim and Marilyn Anderson, and Fern Leach and sons.

Tampa people attending the flower and garden show Sunday afternoon at the home of Goldie Steely in Burdick included Adeline Bernardt, Leona Kleiber, and Lynn and Peggy Kleiber and Nicholas.

Mary Riech of Hope and Georgia Spohn enjoyed dinner in Herington Sunday after church.

Wayne Schwartzman of Wichita was a Saturday overnight and Sunday guest of his mother, Helen Schwartzman.

Paul and Edna Backhus attended the Midwest Polka Club's annual hog roast on Saturday at the Marion County Lake hall.

A number of Tampa people attended the wedding on Saturday of Carson Wiens and Marie Werner at the Durham Baptist church. A dinner followed in the fellowship hall.

Frank and Anna Mae Stika attended the Midwest Polka Club barbecue on Saturday at Marion County Lake.

Greg Sklenar spent Saturday and Sunday with his mother, Lois Sklenar.

Jim and Mary Clemmer met Maxine and Tom Knight of Carthage, Tenn., on Saturday at the home of Wayne and JoAnne Fowler in Emporia. In the evening, the Fowlers and Clemmers attended a celebration of Commodore and Adeline Wood's 60th wedding anniversary, then enjoyed supper in Olpe, where they met Tom and Gayle Dailey of Emporia. The Clemmers also visited Jim's aunt, Lorena Gramke. Jim and Mary were overnight guests of the Fowlers, then went to Topeka on Sunday. They attended church and enjoyed dinner with Mary's sister, Fern Gray. They also attended a party at the home of Nyle and Kathi Sutton, Alex, Meaghan, and Kyle in celebration of Kyle's fifth birthday. Later, Jim and Mary returned to Emporia to visit Bob and Davee Dailey and their houseguest, Mike Dailey of Seattle, Wash.

Frank and Anna Mae Stika, Tom and Lori Moldenhauer and Nikki, and Lisa Hanschu, James and Anna attended the wedding of Christina Cheever and Leland Smith Saturday at the Valley United Methodist Church in Marion. Lori played the organ for the ceremony, Nikki presided at the guest book, and Lisa and James operated video cameras.

Jim Clemmer attended the open house Saturday at Irv Schroeder Motors in Hillsboro in celebration of the business's 40th year and Irv Schroeder's 80th birthday.

Kathy Hubbard of Wellington spent from Thursday to Saturday with her mother, Adeline Bernhardt. They were Thursday evening visitors of Leona Kleiber. On Friday, they attended the Irv Schroeder open house in Hillsboro and enjoyed dinner in Salina. On Saturday, they visited Milda Krauter at St. Luke Hospital in Marion and with Glen Krauter, who was visiting his wife. After Kathy left for home, Adeline visited Lorraine Havlik.

Georgia Spohn met Lenora Graham of Florence and Earl and Ruth Pankratz of Newton in Hillsboro Friday. All went to Durham for dinner.
