Tampa News: FFA students perform well at Moundridge

A group of about 30 members of Saint John's Lutheran Church enjoyed dinner Sunday at Mr. K's Farmhouse in Abilene. The occasion was the annual meeting of Thrivent (formerly Aid Association for Lutherans). Door prizes were given.

Jim and Mary Clemmer spent Monday morning in Emporia where they visited Jim's aunt, Lorena Gramke, and Mary's sisters, Faye Jaggard and Adeline and Commodore Wood.

A group going to Branson, Mo., over the weekend with Heartland Tours, operated by Linda and Dan Peterson of Burdick, included a number of Tampa people and some members of their families. Among those participating were Lawrence and Ruth Mueller of Iola, Warren and Paula Fike of Ramona, Art and Betty Mueller, Paul and Edna Backhus, and Phyllis Mueller. Some of the shows the group attended were Yakov Smirnoff (the Russian comedian), Gatlin Brothers' Christmas Show, Country Christmas Music Show, and Rockettes Christmas Show.

Tom and Dee Duggan spent Friday to Sunday in Bartlesville, Okla., where they were guests of Dee's sister and husband, Darlene and Ernie Kite. Their brother, Ernie Bonham of Tyro, joined them on Saturday. En route home the Duggans visited Deb Hall and Kaylee in Herington.

Dana Depo, Cecilia and Julie Rziha, Andrea Kleiber, and Laura Klenda spent the weekend in Hutchinson attending a religious retreat sponsored by the Immaculate Heart of Mary Convent in Wichita. Susie Rziha is a postulant in the order.

Russ and Julie Kerbs, Ashton and Rustyn and Reuben and Lucille Kerbs attended a pork supper at the United Methodist Church in Burdick Saturday evening. The event was a benefit for Jesse Smith to help him with medical expenses resulting from an accident.

Jim Clemmer visited John Fox Sunday afternoon at St. Luke Hospital in Marion.

Agnes Bernhardt accompanied Adeline Bernhardt to Marion Saturday evening to attend Marion High School's performance of Annie, Get Your Gun at the municipal auditorium.

Lucille Kerbs met Connie Thompson and Taylor in Abilene Saturday for dinner out.

Lori Moldenhauer was the hostess for a Mary Kay and Tupperware party at the American Legion Hall Friday evening. A nice crowd attended.

Ruth Heiser and Georgia Spohn attended the Learning in Retirement program at Tabor College in Hillsboro Thursday morning and then enjoyed lunch out. Barbara Bunting from Northview Developmental Services presented the program. Jane Vajnar also attended and enjoyed dinner in the cafeteria.

Glenn Kerbs of Dodge City visited his parents, Reuben and Lucille Kerbs, Friday afternoon.

Carl and Kathy Hubbard of Wellington were brief visitors of her mother, Adeline Bernhardt, Friday afternoon on their way to Marysville, where they attended a play-off football game. Clint Hubbard played on the Wellington team, which won 14-7.

Several Tampa students were among those from Centre High School participating in a district Future Farmers of America competition at Moundridge Thursday. Jackie Klenda took first place in the creed speaking contest and will participate in state competition. The freshman parliamentary law team also took first. Members were Jackie Klenda, Tad Remy, Bryant Gutsch, Jeremy Kristek, Drew Donahue, and Steven Hageberg. The same team placed fourth in the ritual contest. The varsity parliamentary law team, consisting of Derek Belton, Cecilia Rziha, Kristin Mueller, Andrea Carlson, Josh Spooner, and Shaina Makovec, placed third.

Mildred Hamm, Eleanor Herbel, and Jane Vajnar were among those attending King's Daughters Thursday evening at Durham Baptist Church. Eleanor led the lesson on having a heart for God based on the life of Mary of Bethany. Christine Herbel presented a mission study with a video. Jane and Pearl Koch were hostesses. Current officers were re-elected for 2003. They are Edie Ollenburger, president; Valera Hamm, vice president; Dorene Joy, secretary; and Janice Kaufman, treasurer.

Betty Mueller visited Helen Schwartzman Wednesday afternoon.

Tom and Dee Duggan spent Monday to Thursday in Branson, Mo., with a Sunflower Tours group. Friends in the group included Joe and Joyce Cox of Abilene and Everett and Rhea Kolling of Herington.

Joe Zinn of Lost Springs and Paul Backhus spent Monday to Wednesday in Fayetteville, Ark., where they attended a Franklin motor school.

Sunflower Senior Citizens held their monthly potluck dinner and meeting Tuesday at the senior center. Martha Melcher was hostess with Evelyn Hensley assisting her in the absence of Tillie Hein. Fourteen members and one guest, Joan Jones, were present. Officers elected for 2003 were Evelyn Hensley, president; Leona Kleiber, vice president; Adeline Bernhardt, secretary; and Margaret Jirak, treasurer. It was decided to have dinner at the café for the Christmas meeting Dec. 10. After the meeting, the group played card Bingo.

Evelyn Strecker visited her sister, Helen Schwartzman, Wednesday morning.

Reuben and Lucille Kerbs went to Salina Tuesday and took their granddaughter, Ashton Kerbs, out for supper.

Adeline Bernhardt visited Milda Krauter Wednesday at Marion Manor in Marion.

Leona Kleiber was a Monday supper guest of Lynn and Peggy Kleiber, Amanda, Andrea, and Nicholas.

Greg Sklenar of Wichita visited his mother Lois on Sunday.

Frank and Anna Mae Stika and Lori Moldenhauer and Nikki went to Council Grove Sunday for dinner out and the Christmas open house.

Tony Young of Goessel visited Saturday with his aunt, Lois Sklenar

Ronnie and Lisa Hanschu enjoyed supper out Saturday evening in Council Grove while James and Anna spent the evening with their grandparents, Frank and Anna Mae Stika.
