Tampa News: Students compete in quiz meet

Several Tampa young people were among the Centre students competing Saturday in the league quiz meet at Wakefield. The varsity team, consisting of Cecilia Rziha, Alisa Fernandes, Tad Remy, and Danielle Engler, took first in the league. The junior varsity team advanced beyond pool play, but did not medal. On that team were Rachel Davis, Dana Depo, Brianne Stahlecker, and Jenna Beneke. The regional meet will be Feb. 6 at Centre.
Martha Melcher, Eleanor Murphy, and Sean Leihy attended the card party in Herington Sunday evening.
Paul and Edna Backhus visited Hugo and Naomi Wendt Saturday evening at Sterling House in Abilene.
Velma Stites of Hope and Georgia Spohn attended a dinner Sunday at the Catholic parish hall in Hope.
Reuben and Lucille Kerbs went to Abilene the evening of Jan. 14. Doug and Connie Thompson, Allison and Taylor took them out for supper at Mr. K's Farmhouse in celebration of Reuben's birthday.
Eleanor Murphy and Martha Melcher were among numerous Tampa people attending the dinner Sunday at the Catholic parish hall in Hope.
Russ Kerbs took his parents, Reuben and Lucille, out for breakfast Jan. 13, for Reuben's birthday. Reuben received many cards and phone calls with birthday greetings.
Art and Betty Mueller accompanied Warren and Paula Fike to Iola Jan. 12 for a surprise 70th birthday dinner for Lawrence Mueller of Iola at the home of Tom and Carla Mueller. Also going from Tampa was Phyllis Mueller. Other guests included Ruth Mueller, Susan and Don Platt and daughter and Scott and Shelly Mueller and family of Iola, Kimberly and Steve Howland and family of Kansas City, Ed and Alice Winter and Agnes Steinert of Hillsboro, Richard and Doris Ott and Duane Steinert of Wichita.
Reuben and Lucille Kerbs went to El Dorado Jan. 12 to join Al and Lila Gooding, Don and Cecile Penney, and Art and Evelyn Schultz of Topeka, and Virgil and Barbara Gooding of El Dorado, their children and grandchildren for a surprise birthday dinner at Golden Corral in celebration of Virgil's 75th birthday. Everyone went from there to Virgil and Barb's home for an afternoon of visiting.
Gary and Carole Spohn and Georgia Spohn enjoyed dinner at the café on Friday.
Lucille Kerbs visited her daughter, Connie Thompson, in Abilene Jan. 6. They celebrated Connie's birthday with dinner and shopping.
