Teachers recognized at HHS assembly
What makes teachers become teachers?
Dave Clark was inspired by a high school music teacher. Diana Holub subbed for a teacher once and found she liked it. Carolyn Long's teachers positively affected her life.
And what do students like about their teachers?
Jim Robb uses accents and plenty of hand gestures in class. Ruth Baldner tells jokes on Fridays. Michele Melton greets all her students with a smile. Anita Boese always knows exactly what you're looking for.
These Hillsboro High School teachers were just a few of those recognized Tuesday morning at an assembly at the HHS auditorium. The event took place in conjunction with National Teacher Appreciation Week, which ends Friday.
With the band blasting away as the students filed into the auditorium, the atmosphere was more like a pep rally, said HHS Principal Dale Honeck.
But the event wasn't scheduled to honor athletes — it was to honor teachers.
"I think it's high time that we recognize the wonderful faculty we have working in our school," Honeck said.
Teaching is no ordinary job. It takes courage to face a class full of kids.
"You try getting up in front of people day after day," he said.
It also takes heart — a compassion for students.
"There's no doubt if you love teaching you're going to get your heart broken," Honeck said.
Superintendent Gordon Mohn said that though many things have changed at HHS since he graduated, one thing hasn't.
"Thirty-five years ago, school was a lot different, but one thing that isn't different is the quality of the teachers.
Each teacher present was recognized before the crowd by one HHS peer helper and Tabor College professor Dr. Bruce Anthony, who also spoke at the event.
