Ten inducted into National Honor Society

Ten Hillsboro High School students were honored for their scholastic and leadership achievements Monday night at the National Honor Society induction ceremony, held at the Tabor Historic Church.

Six juniors and four seniors were inducted into the Hillsboro chapter of the honor society. After current members lighted four candles representing scholarship, service, leadership, and character, each new member recited the induction pledge, signed the registry, and accepted the honor society "token" of a medal to wear around their necks.

This year's pledges were: Jessica Boese, senior; Aislinn Conrad, senior; Katie Fast, junior; Jared Fish, junior; Danielle Goossen, junior; Kelli Just, junior; Allison Kunkel, junior; Aaron Miller, junior; Graham Ratzlaff, senior; and Lisa Suderman, senior.

HHS students who are already members of the honor society were also present at the ceremony. They are Candace Barkman, Adrien Bebermeyer, Andrew Brubacher, Angela Claassen, Laci Frantz, April Funk, Jodie Hiebert, Alisa Jost, Dustin Jost, Elise Matz, Katy Nixon, Cheryl Prieb, Brandon Ratzlaff, and Meg Vogel.

To qualify for membership in the honor society, Hillsboro students must have a 3.7 grade point average. That's higher than the national requirement, said HHS Principal Dale Honeck, who is a member of the honor society advisory board.

But the qualifications don't end with grades. Each student is evaluated by a five-person committee on the basis of character and leadership skills before he or she is selected.

"You can be very proud of these people," Honeck said. "This is what our teachers and administrators work for."

Terry Bebermeyer, HHS faculty member and also an advisory board member, said that each student should be commended for his or her achievement.

"It's a very prestigious honor," Bebermeyer said.

Also at the ceremony, it was announced that Matz and Alisa Jost have been nominated for a scholarship offered by the National Association of Secondary Schools.

Each year, HHS gets to nominate two students for the scholarship. Winners are chosen at a later date.

According to its official Web site, the National Honor Society was established in 1921. It now has more than one million members across the continent.s
