Tennis team sends three to state meet
The Hillsboro High School boys' tennis team will be sending three players to state competition this weekend.
At Monday's regional competition, which took place in Hillsboro, Trojan senior Brandon Ratzlaff took first place in singles competition to advance to state. And in doubles, the duo of Florin Nae and Tyler Weinbrenner took fourth to also earn a ticket to state.
Competition runs Friday and Saturday at Wichita Collegiate.
Ratzlaff swept through four rounds of competition to claim the regional crown. He received a bye in the opening round, then defeated Hesston's Michael Holle 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
Ratzlaff next downed Belleville's Preston Moore 7-5, 7-6, 7-2 to advance to the championship round, where he defeated Sacred Heart player Jimmy McKee 6-2, 7-5 to take first.
In doubles action, the duo of Weinbrenner and Nae had a bye in the first round, then defeated Immaculata 6-4, 7-5. Then they fell to Hesston 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to claim fourth place.
Hillsboro placed second overall with seven points. Hesston took first place as a team with 10 points, Maranatha took third with six, and Kansas CityChristian took fourth with five points.
