Thirteenth game unlucky for Goessel

The 13th game proved unlucky for the Goessel High School boys' basketball team this past Friday, as the Bluebirds saw their 12-game win streak end with a 65-55 loss at home to Class 3A Remington.
After hosting Ell-Saline on Tuesday, Goessel plays at Flint Hills Thursday, and at Canton-Galva Friday.
The Bluebirds ended last week's play with an overall record of 14-2 and a Heart of America League record of 7-1.
Against Remington, Goessel scored only four points in the first quarter and trailed by seven at halftime.
Remington added to its lead in the second half, but Goessel closed the gap slightly in the fourth quarter.
Garrett Hiebert led the Bluebirds with 21 points and Brett Goerzen followed with 15. Travis Buller canned nine points, Craig Banman scored four, Nathan Ensz and Jordan Voth each added two points and Nathan Amstutz and Austin Unruh each scored one point.
The Bluebirds won their 12th game in a row Jan. 30 with a 52-41 victory over Moundridge. The Bluebirds trailed at the end of the first quarter, but outpaced the Wildcats in the last three periods.
Hiebert and B. Goerzen led the team again with 13 and 12 points respectively. Buller scored nine points, J. Voth seven, Ensz seven, and Sheldon Goerzen dropped in four points.
