The winning streak continued for the Hillsboro High School boys' track team last Friday as the Trojan boys won the MCAA league title for the third straight year. The meet was hosted by Smoky Valley in Lindsborg.

In a field of 10 teams, the Hillsboro boys managed to hold off challenger Smoky Valley and win the meet scoring 146 team total points. Smoky Valley placed second with 117 points followed by Halstead with 67 to round out the top three teams.

The girls placed sixth with a total of 48 points. Hesston took first with 98.5 team points followed by Ellinwood with 84.5 and Smoky Valley with 70.

"The boys and girls both had good performances," head coach Dennis Boldt said.

In the boys' division, Boldt said he knew Smoky Valley would be a strong challenger coming into the meet.

According to Boldt after the field events, the two teams were "virtually tied — the difference was again made on the track."

In the boys' field events, Alan Yoder and Caleb Marsh started the team off with a one-two finish in the long jump, respectively. Marsh and Daniel Yoder finished first and second in the pole vault. Sammy Espada and Derek Mayfield finished first and third in the triple jump. Boldt said Espada also finished fifth in the long jump his personal best of 19 feet and 6.25 inches.

The highlight of the day on the track was Aaron Yoder according to Boldt. Yoder placed first in the 1600, 800, and 3200 meter runs.

"Winning those races, simply stated is not an easy task," Boldt said. "But he (Aaron) was on a mission. He is a smart runner; he ran his race to win the 1600 but allowed himself enough energy to post his best 800 time of the season."

The boys' 4x100 meter relay team of Alan Yoder, Tyler Peachey, Brodie Unrau, and Caleb Marsh, who have taken first in most of their meets, did not make the hand off in the exchange zone and did not place.

"I knew the boys wanted to win the title again this year, so I had signed up Aaron earlier to run in the 3200, making it four events for him," Boldt said. "Losing 10 points from the relay would put us close, but Aaron's win in the 3200 helped us."

But the boys' 4x400 meter relay team of Peachey, Aa. Yoder, D. Yoder, and Marsh fought back and set a new league record with a time of 3:28.17.

For the girls' team, Charity Davis placed first in the long jump leading the team off in the field events. Cheryl Prieb and Mindy Munguya placed third in the pole vault and the triple jump, respectively, and Andrea King placed fifth in the discus.

On the track, Alisa Jost placed third in the 400 meter dash. Davis, who runs the 100 meter dash, false started and could not continue the race.

"But once again, it was the relay teams that highlighted the day for the girls," Boldt said.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Prieb, Jessica Boese, Elise Matz, and Davis placed second behind Hesston.

Matz, Boese, Davis, and Jost won first place in the 4x400 meter relay with a season's best time of 4:19.0.

"The girls again have done an excellent job, and we look forward to regional competition," Boldt said.

Regionals will be held Friday at Marion. Field events will start at 3 p.m., followed by prelims at 4:15 and finals at 5:30.

The top four finishers in each event at regionals will advance to the state meet on May 30-31 at Cessna Stadium on the Wichita State University campus in Wichita.
