Tough road ahead
It hardly seems possible, but it's true: Another session of the Kansas state legislature is upon us.
Why does it seem like we just got out of the 2002 session? Oh wait, I know why — because last year's session was the longest in Kansas history.
We can only hope that history doesn't repeat itself in 2003.
Whether or not our legislators break that "record" once again remains to be seen. But what we definitely know right now is that these men and women have a rough road ahead.
The problem is clear: Kansas needs money. Our deficit is pushing the hundreds of millions, and our revenue continues to drop.
How can Kansas solve these problems? By slashing programs? Hiking taxes?
As with many things in life, the solution probably lies somewhere in the middle.
Sure makes me glad I'm not a legislator. I've got the luxury of talking about the problems — they have the luxury of actually dealing with them.
But the fact is this: They ran for office. They wanted to be elected as senators and representatives. They got their wish.
And they represent us up there at the capitol building in Topeka. They are there to speak for us.
If you've got an idea or opinion to share with your legislator, go ahead and give it to them. Send it by U.S. mail, fax, or e-mail. Give them a call by phone. Let your representative know what's on your mind.
See, even though you're not up in the capitol building yourself, you can still be an active participant in this year's legislative session.
