Trojan baseball team falls to Lyons

The deck was stacked against the Trojans Tuesday night right from the start.

One bad card was might have been the visiting Lyons Lions owned a sweep of the Collegiate Spartans — a team the Trojans lost to earlier in the year. The Lions blanked the Spartans, 7-0 and 1-0, last week.

Unlike the Spartans, however, the Trojans did manage to score on Lyons.

Three runs in the first game weren't enough as the Lions ruined Hillsboro's two-game winning streak with a 10-3 win in the early game. A 12-0 shutout capped the evening.

The Lions jumped to a commanding 7-1 lead through six innings before Hillsboro finally scored the final two runs down to its last three outs.

Brandon Moss suffered the first game loss despite getting relief from Chad Hughbanks. Despite the seven-run margin, the game seemed much closer.

A scoreless inning in the first was one of the few bright spots for the Trojans in the nightcap.

The wheels fell off in the top of the second with the Lions erupting for five runs off freshman starter Tyler Riesen.

Already with a huge 5-0 lead and one of its two aces, Wade Church, on the mound, Lyons blew the game open with a four-run third, going through two Trojan pitchers.

Riesen took the defeat in the finale.

On deck for the victory-starved Trojans is a makeup game 4:30 p.m. Monday at Inman.
