Trojan duo named to all-state hoop team

Despite falling nine points shy of playing for a fourth state title in the last six years, the 2002-03 basketball season was still one the Trojans can hold their heads high about.

Besides the Trojans, only the state champion Norton Bluejays can lay claims to beating top-seeded Riley County and standout Jordy Nelson.

In what many had projected to decide the boys' title, the Trojans got payback from last season's first round debacle, edging the Falcons for third place to end the year with a 23-3 finish.

On a team that was loaded with senior-talent, much of the Trojans' success could be attributed to the backcourt tandem of Tyler Weinbrenner and Andy Brubacher.

Leading the Trojans both in scoring and assists (14.5 ppg, 3.5 apg), Tyler Weinbrenner was a repeat first team All-State Class 3A selection by Kansas Newspapers, The Wichita Eagle and The Topeka Capital- Journal.

An All Class 3A honorable mention selection a year ago, Brubacher repeated as honorable mention for The Eagle while being named to The Capital Journal's third team.

Brubacher averaged 10.2 points per game while tying fellow senior Dustin Jost with 63 steals.

He also boasted a 42 percent average shooting the three on team that hit 31 percent from behind the arc.

Perennial adversary Nelson was selected by both newspapers as a first-team all-state all-class selection.

Weinbrenner opted to become a Pioneer for NAIA Division II powerhouse Mid-America Nazarene while Brubacher will stay home to play for one of the KCAC's most respected coaches, his father Don at Tabor.
