Trojan footballers report for weeklong camp
The football season is over a month away, but the anticipation is already building about what 2003 has in store for the Trojans.
The players reported to the weeklong camp Monday to begin preparing for the upcoming season.
Two days into camp, Trojan coach Dustin McEwen has been pleased with what he has seen.
"We don't do any conditioning at camp," said McEwen. "Camp is designed more for the underclassmen so they know what we want to do and learn the basics.
"I've really been pleased with what I have seen so far. The guys are picking it up well, and they're working hard."
So far, the Trojans have practiced running plays, learning where to line up both on offense and defense, reading coverages, blocking assignments and finding open holes on offense.
McEwen's also been pleased with the 2003 team's dedication to the weight room, calling it as devoted as any team he's ever had.
"Considering the summer schedule and vacations, we've done a good job at getting guys in to lift," he said. "Some of the guys have been in there 30 times this summer. The kids are in pretty good shape."
That will come in handy to avoid getting manhandled again like the Trojans did last year by the Nickerson earth movers.
The Trojans start full padded practice August 18 and open the season Sept. 5 at home against Haven.
