Trojan girls battle Riley County
Coming off a victory over Lyons, the Hillsboro Trojan girls' basketball team was ready for No. 1 seed Riley County Tuesday in the Trojan Classic. The state-ranked Falcons defeated Hillsboro 42-33, but not without a fight.
The Trojans overcame a 10-6 first quarter deficit to outscore the Falcons 14-10 and take a 20-20 tie into the locker room at half.
"We stayed with them the first half," said head coach Becky Carlson. "We played good defense and blocked out and we were in the game with the No. 1 ranked team in the state."
The second half was all Riley County. The Trojans appeared fatigued. The Falcon press caused several Trojan turnovers and scoring opportunities for Riley County.
"If we could have scored on a few more possessions and not turned the ball over so many times, it would have been a different ball game," Carlson said.
Carlson was pleased to see how her team played against the Falcons.
Sophomore JuliAnne Chisholm led the team with 11 points and seven rebounds. Senior Amy Duerksen had six points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Hannah Marsh scored six points and senior Emily Ratzlaff scored four points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Hillsboro plays Cair-Paravel Latin from Topeka at 6 p.m. Thursday in Brown Gym.
