Trojan girls lose in overtime; place third in Trojan Classic
The Hillsboro High School girls' basketball team lost 44-42 in overtime to El Dorado Tuesday night.
The Trojans had a 23-19 lead at half time but only scored one point in the third quarter to El Dorado's eight.
Hillsboro came back in the fourth quarter with the help of Megan Peachey who drained two back-to-back three-pointers, all six of her points.
"El Dorado is a deliberate team. They slow down the tempo, execute their offense, and work for the shot," said head coach Becky Carlson.
Hillsboro shot 50 percent and had 23 turnovers.
"We were tired, and when you are tired, you make mistakes," Carlson said. "I thought we showed a lot of heart at the end of regulation and in the over time. We just couldn't finish."
Chisholm led the team with 16 points, five rebounds, and five blocks. Marsh had 15 points, six steals, and seven assists.
The Trojans travel to Marion Friday night and to Halstead Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m.
Trojans win third in tourney
The Trojans finished third in the Trojan Classic Tournament Saturday afternoon with a 40-32 win over Wamego.
Hillsboro led throughout the game, holding a 21-17 lead at half. The Red Raiders never took a lead in the game but the physical team kept Hillsboro working.
"This was a good game for us," said Carlson. "Wamego is a physical team, and we had to stay composed and execute our offense. It was a good win."
Chisholm led the team with a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds, and blocked four shots. Ratzlaff scored eight points and Marsh, seven. Marsh also had three steals and four assists.
After a hard-fought loss to Riley County in the first round of the tournament, the Trojans sailed through a 46-12 lopsided victory over Cair Paravel of Topeka.
Hillsboro got off to a slow start, running two minutes off the clock before Marsh drained a three-pointer. A minute later, Marsh had a steal and a lay-up and Hillsboro was on top 5-0. Chisholm canned two with Marsh following with a three-pointer and the first quarter ended 10-0.
The Trojans had another slow start in the second quarter before picking up 11 points and ending the half up 21-2. The Lions scored their first bucket with 1:13 left in the half.
Hillsboro outscored Cair-Paravel 25-10 in the second half.
With the lopsided victory, Carlson was able to get playing time for most of her bench.
Marsh led the team with 15 points; Chisholm scored 12 and Duerksen, nine.
