The Hillsboro High School golf team played at the Herington Invitational Golf Tournament on Tuesday, April 5, and hosted the Hillsboro Invitational Golf Tournament last Friday.

According to head golf coach Scott O'Hare, the tournament was stopped after the first nine holes due to weather.

"Conditions were pretty tough for the first tournament of the season," said O'Hare. "Although the temperature was nice, it was windy and that course sits up on a hill in the open."

Andrew Bina took fourth place among the medalist with a 38.

"It was very nice to see Andrew play well here early in the season and place in the top four," said O'Hare. "He is striking the ball pretty well now, and when he puts his whole game together, her should be very competitive in every tournament."

Justin Kent placed seventh among the medalists with a 40.

"I was happy to see Justin Kent medal in the top 10 in his first high school competition," said O'Hare. "Justin comes into high school with a lot of tournament experience though the Kansas Junior Golf Association. That experience in Junior Golf really shows."

In the two-man, Lance Bartel and Jordan Allen took third place with an 88. Andrew Bina, Justin Kent, Patrick Harrison, and Derek Hamm placed second in the four-man with a 183. All six Hillsboro golfers took third in the six-man with a 262.

"I am pleased with our performance for the first tournament of the season considering the condition they played in and after only having about a week and a half of practice," said O'Hare. "Everyone earned at least two medals through a combination of individual and team competitions."

Hillsboro hosted 11 teams for its invitational tournament and placed four golfers in the top 15.

"I was certainly pleased with our performance and outcome," said O'Hare. "We were at a little bit of an advantage playing on our home course."

Kent took first place among the medalists with a 76, Bina took third place with a 79, Harrison took fifth place with an 80, and Hamm placed 13th with a score of 86.

O'Hare said that Kent's winning first place was a positive thing for the future of the golf program.

"I was especially pleased for Andrew and Justin to place so well because they both had a couple of holes where they made some mistakes and came back to raise their scores," said O'Hare.

For the team results, Hillsboro placed first in the six-man and four-man competitions with a 499 and 321. In the two-man competition Hillsboro placed seventh with a 178.

Hillsboro's next tournament is tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Wichita.
