Trojan netters fall to 4-11 on season years ago
The Trojan volleyball team, hoping to get a win at home after three weeks on the road, were 0-2 Tuesday against Smoky Valley.
The Trojans fought hard in game one, losing 27-25 to the Vikings who scored six straight points before Hillsboro made its comeback.
In game two, Hillsboro was down 4-13 and never got closer than 10 points before losing 25-13 on a net serve. The Trojans had three consecutive net serves and a total of five in game two.
Senior Emily Ratzlaff led the team in the first match in attacks going 7-12 and led in serving, 7-7 with two aces. Senior Amy Duerksen was 12-14 in passing. Sophomore JuliAnne Chisholm was 4-7 in attacks with two kills. Sophomore Tina Frick was 2-6 in blocks with two assists.
In game one of match two, Hillsboro never led in the contest and trailed by as many as eight points. They closed the gap to 24-14 before losing 25-21. The Trojans again struggled with missed serves and missed blocks.
Game two was a replay of the evening with Hillsboro falling behind, 25-17, and not being able to overcome the deficit. The team was 10-30 in serve receive and 32-37 in serves with two aces.
Ratzlaff again led the team in attacks, 8-14 with three kills. Frick was 4-4 in attacks with three kills. Chisholm was 4-7 in blocking with three aces. Amy Duerksen was 34-37 in setting with 12 assists, 13-14 in passing, and 7-7 in serves. Senior Katie Baltzer and junior Laura Lindsay were 5-5 in serving.
"We have to be able to fight back at the end and find a way to win," said coach Sandy Arnold. "We can't allow ourselves to get into holes and have to dig our way out."
Hillsboro plays Saturday in the Canton-Galva tournament. Game time is 9 a.m.
