Trojan tennis squad takes first at Conway Springs
The Hillsboro High School boys' tennis team started its season in impressive fashion last Thursday. The team took first place at the March 28 Conway Springs tournament.
Both singles competitors — No. 1 Brandon Ratzlaff and No. 2 Tyler Weinbrenner — took first place in their individual brackets by going undefeated. Ratzlaff defeated Circle's Jon Hecker 8-6, Conway Springs' Kyle Robinson 8-4, and South Barber's Joel Forester 8-3.
Weinbrenner defeated Circle's Jeremy Jones 8-2, Conway Springs' Mathew Pauly 8-6, and South Barber's Clay Phillips 8-3.
Both doubles teams took second place at the tourney. The team of Adam Driggers and Caleb Dirks won two matches and lost one. In their first matchup, they defeated Circle's Kuttler and Hinds 8-5. They dropped the next match to Conway Springs' Stuever and Matzen 6-8, but they came back to win their final match against South Barber's Fenderson and Shelite 8-3.
The team of Jesse Janzen and ??? Woelk also went two and one on the day. They won their first match against Circle's Pritchard and Aitchinson 8-2, then dropped the next match to Conway Springs' Gerber and May 6-8. They went on to win their final match 8-3 over South Barber's Cox and Wright.
Tuesday, the team traveled to the Smoky Valley Invitational in Lindsborg. The team didn't fare quite as well there, placing fifth as a team.
In individual competition, Ratzlaff was the only Trojan to place. He took fourth out of 16 players.
