Trojan tennis team fifth at league meet
Hillsboro High School played host Monday to the 2008 Mid-Central Activities Association tennis tournament.
Wichita Collegiate dominated the day with 77 points, and the Trojans claimed fifth place out of nine teams with 32 points.
Both number ones earned fifth place for Hillsboro. Clay Shewey represented the Trojans in number one singles play, while Tyler Hagen and Ben Heyen were the number one doubles duo.
Shewey went into the tournament as the fifth seed, and lost to four seed Mike Jaderston of Sterling, 6-1, 6-1.
The loss guaranteed Shewey no higher than fifth place, but victories in his next two matches did just that.
He won his next match 9-0 and finished off Ethan Thomas of Ellinwood, 9-5, in the fifth-place match.
Hagen and Heyen lost their first match as well as the seventh seed against number two seed Hesston, 6-0, 6-2.
With nine teams in the bracket, Hagen and Heyen were forced to play an extra match, but still earned fifth place with three straight victories.
Their first match against a duo from Haven resulted in an easy 9-1 victory, and while the next matches were closer, (9-6 and 9-7), the duo still came home with fifth place.
Mark Prieb was the Trojans' number two singles player, and he fell victim in the first round as well, losing to three seed Caleb Wheeler of Hesston.
Prieb came back with a 9-1 victory against Christian Carter of Nickerson, but lost in the fifth-place match to Cody Bryant of Ellinwood, 9-7.
Mathew Brown and Jarod Hamm lost their first round match, before winning the first round of consolation play.
A loss to a duo from Hoisington gave the Trojans two points and an eighth-place finish.
