Trojan wrestlers compete at Eureka

Ryan Janzen out for the season, surgery required for rotator cuff

Staff writer

With only one senior and four sophomores, head coach Scott O'Hare and his wrestlers placed 10th in a pool of 15 teams at the Eureka Wrestling Tournament held Saturday.

Hampered by injuries, inexperience and a shortage of wrestlers, O'Hare received another blow to his team. Senior Ryan Janzen is out for the season. According to O'Hare, Janzen has been hampered by a shoulder injury throughout the season. Tests now indicate that Janzen must undergo surgery on his rotator cuff.

"Ryan's a two-time state qualifier, and I know he is pretty disappointed," O'Hare said, "He's especially disappointed for himself, his family, and for me as his coach."

"I've been with Ryan for about eight years through the program here in Hillsboro — being a senior it (the news) is very disappointing for him," he said.

As for the Eureka tournament, O'Hare said he was pleased with his team's performance. He felt that all five of them wrestled well.

Daniel Yoder (145) won third and ended the day with a 3-1 record.

Ricky Johnson (112) placed fourth with a 2-2 record followed by Eric Cress (125) and Andrew Bina (140), who both placed fifth and had 2-2 records. Kurtis Shaw did not place and ended the day with a 2-2 record.

Lincoln-Lyons Double Dual

The Trojans hosted a double dual last Thursday with Lincoln and Lyons.

Hillsboro lost both matches.

"With the matches we had on the mat, I could see a lot of progress," O'Hare said. "Low numbers and having to give up four weight classes really does hurt us as a team."

In the first match against Lincoln, the team lost 48-22.

In its second match against Lyons, the team lost 52-27.

The Trojan wrestlers will host a double dual tonight with Eureka and Council Grove. Match time is 6 p.m.

The JV wrestlers will compete Saturday at the MCAA League tournament at Haven. Match time begins at 9 a.m.
