Trojan wrestlers off to strong start

It might not have been a perfect night for Hillsboro High School on the wrestling mat, but head coach Scott O'Hare was pleased with his team's overall performance.

The Trojans traveled to Smoky Valley Thursday to take on the home Vikings, Marion Warriors, and Hoisington Cardinals.

HHS left with victories against Marion and Smoky Valley, but a loss to Hoisington.

"It was a good way to start off the season and it gives us a good measure of where we are," O'Hare said. "These are probably three of the toughest teams in the MCAA."

Alex Jost (112 pounds), Nicholas Mueller (135), and Tyler Jones (145), didn't seem to notice as all three went 3-0 on the night.

189-pounder Jacob Yoder won both of the matches he wrestled as well.

Overall the wrestlers were 22-13.

"I saw numerous positives from the night, but as expected, we still have a lot to work on," O'Hare said.

That being said, O'Hare loved the fact his team seemed conditioned well for the first meet of the season.

"Wrestling three matches in one evening this early in the season is mentally and physically challenging," he said.

HHS would have been 3-0 if one match had gone a different way in the Hoisington match-up, as the Trojans lost 35-30.

They handled Marion easily, 42-21, and crushed Smoky Valley, 52-27.

"I feel pretty good about where we are right now, but I am not completely satisfied," O'Hare said. "I have a lot of high expectations for this team.

"If they are willing to put in the time and effort, they could be very strong this year."
