Trojan wrestlers take three of top four medals

Staff writer

The Hillsboro High School wrestling team took second, third, and fourth places last Saturday at the tournament in Herington.

"There were certainly some bright spots," said coach Scott O'Hare. "I'm disappointed to only have taken three medals, but it is one of the toughest tournaments we go to."

O'Hare said that the Herington tournament had a number of 4A schools including Abilene and Chapman with a lot of good wrestlers.

"It makes for some pretty good competition," said O'Hare. "We still need to work to improve on preparation and intensity, but technically we're doing some good things."

O'Hare was pleased with Andrew Bina's second place medal, saying Bina had wrestled solidly, losing his match in the finals when he got caught in a bad position.

According to O'Hare, Rick Johnson put together some of his best wrestling at the Herington tournament.

Chris Jensen took fourth place, bringing home his first high school medal.

"After being away from the sport for a number of years, he's really starting to improve," said O'Hare.

Of the 11 wrestlers at the tournament, O'Hare says two or three others were a move away from medals.

"We lost some close matches in the consolation semi-finals," he said.

The Trojans will wrestle again this weekend. With a junior varsity tournament in Abilene on Friday and varsity tournament in Halstead on Friday and Saturday, O'Hare isn't sure which wrestlers are going where.

"Halstead is always a pretty good tournament," said O'Hare. "It's an opportunity to get a lot of good mat experience, and I think I have five or six guys who could really do well there."
