Trojans claim MCAA crown

The Hillsboro High School boys' and girls' track team did not let another cold, wet, and dreary day stop them from achieving their goals — to win first at league. Both teams came away with first place victories at the MCAA track meet held last Friday at Nickerson.

The girls scored a team total of 97 while the boys dominated the competition scoring 128 points.

"The kids did a fantastic job despite the poor weather," said Head Coach Dennis Boldt. "I have always thought the league track meet was a good gauge of your season. We have an extremely tough league considering many of the teams are 4A," he said.

League schools competing were Collegiate, Ellinwood, Halstead, Haven, Hesston, Hillsboro, Lyons, Nickerson, Smoky Valley, and Sterling.

It may sound like a broken record, but Hillsboro's relay teams again dominated on the track. The girls won first in all three relays, and the boys took first in two and second in one.

"One of the top highlights would have to be the six relays," Boldt said. "Our kids are excited about our relay teams and work extremely hard to prepare for each meet."

Highlights for the girls, according to Boldt was Cheryl Prieb setting a new school record in the pole vault with a 7'9" jump. Prieb finished second. Andrea Peachey won first in the 100-meter hurdles. Charity Davis placed second in the 100-meter dash, fourth in the 200, and second in the long jump with 16'3.75".

One highlight for the boys Boldt said was Sheldon Funk wining pole vault with a 14'16" jump. Funk attempted to go 15', but failed. Another highlight was Daniel Yoder's second place in the pole vault with a 12' jump.

Alan Yoder continues to climb back into the competition. He placed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.45, against some stiff competition from the Wichita Collegiate sprinters.

"The surprise of the day would have to be in our high jump and triple jump competition," Boldt said.

Brodie Unrau won first place in the high jump clearing 5'11". Derek Mayfield jumped 39'6.50" to win first in triple jump.

"These two sophomore boys had an excellent day and look to do well in these events in the future," Boldt said.

Up next for the Trojans is the regional track meet to be held in Halstead. Starting time is 3 p.m.

Boldt explained that in class 3A, each team is allowed to send two competitors in each event. Three competitors are allowed if all three meet the qualifying standard set by the state.

Records are kept of the best performances of each athlete in each event throughout the season. Boldt must choose two athletes per individual event to go to regionals.

Boldt said he does not always choose two athletes per event. He explained that coaches are encouraged to send only the athletes who have a chance to place.

At the regional meet, the top four places in each event will advance to state competition which will be held on May 24-25 at Wichita State University in Wichita.

A few of the schools at the regional meet who will be very competitive, according to Boldt, are Lakin for the boys, Conway Springs for the girls, and Holcomb and Collegiate will have good athletes in both divisions.

"Our regional is extremely competitive," said Boldt. "Knowing the competition helps us adjust our entries. If they (the athletes) qualify for state competition, they know they have a good chance to medal at the state level."
