Trojans escape with victory at home invitational

Sports reporter

Playing with a white and a red team, the Hillsboro High School tennis team won a tie-break Monday with Hesston, clinching first place at its home invitational.

Kyle Kroeker continued to come through for the Trojans, taking first place for the white team in number one singles. After a bye in the first round, the senior won 8-2 in the semifinals, and 8-0 in the championship round.

Number two singles player Macy Fadenrecht benefited from a bye and an 8-2 victory in the semifinals to reach the championship match. In a close finals round, he won 8-6 to claim the Trojans' second first-place finish.

Robert Jost and Peter Fast battled to an 8-4 victory in the first round, before falling by the same score in the semis. The duo bounced back strong in the third place match, winning 8-1.

Needing at least a third place finish in the number two doubles to clinch first, Ric Johnson and Clay Shewey did just that. The pair won its first round match, 8-0, but fell 8-6 in the semis. As did Jost and Fast, the duo came back strong with an 8-0 shutout for third place.

The team totaled 60 points to take first place. Hillsboro red team took fifth with three, fifth-place finishes: Caleb Barkman, number one singles; Mathew Brown and Mark Prieb, number one doubles; and Nolan Dirks and Joe Fischer; number two doubles.

The team played Tuesday at the Sterling invitational, and will play Thursday in the league meet at Sterling.
