Trojans mowed down by Hesston Swathers

The Trojan girls' basketball team played a close first quarter Tuesday with Hesston before being mowed down by the Swathers 63-33 at Hesston.

The Trojans came out on fire in the first quarter, scoring 17 of their total points. They cooled off in the second quarter and took a 37-18 deficit into the locker room at half time.

"We stayed with them in the first quarter then Hesston took over," said head coach Becky Carlson.

The Swather defense was more than the Trojans could handle.

"Hesston also shot the lights out," Carlson said. "They just took over the game."

The second half was all Hesston with Hillsboro scoring nine points to their 26.

Sophomore JuliAnne Chisholm led the team with 11 points. Sophomore Hannah Marsh and senior Amy Duerksen had seven points each and sophomore Megan Peachey and senior Emily Ratzlaff scored four each.

"Even though it became apparent in the third quarter that the game was over for us," said Carlson, "our team never stopped playing. I saw lots of character from them."

The Trojans are going to need character plus more for their next two games. Friday they take on the formidable Lions Lyons at home. Game time is 5 p.m. Tuesday Hillsboro plays unbeaten Riley County in the Trojan Classic at 4:30 p.m. in Hillsboro.

Last Friday, the Trojans destroyed the Nickerson Panthers 52-29 in Brown Gym.

"We played well against Nickerson," Carlson said. "They were never really in the game. We shot well and pressed well."

The Trojans found a formula that worked against the Panthers — looking inside to Chisholm.

"We got the ball into her and JuliAnne did a good job finishing her shot," said Carlson.

Chisholm had a double-double, scoring 24 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. She was 10-17 in two-pointers and 4-4 at the free throw line.

Marsh had eight points, three steals, and eight assists while Peachey scored seven points.

The Trojans' record is 3-4.
