Trojans send 23 to state meet years ago

Boys take second, girls third at regionals

Twenty-three Hillsboro High School track team members are headed for state competition on Friday and Saturday at the KSHSAA State track meet at Wichita State University in Wichita.

The Trojans qualified athletes in 13 individual events and five relay teams. To qualify for state, the athletes had to place in the top four in an event at the regionals held last Friday in Halstead.

"Getting as many kids into the state track championships as we can is our first priority when it comes to regional competition," said Head Coach Dennis Boldt.

"The Halstead regional and the Minneapolis regional would have to be considered the strongest sites," he said.

As a team, the boys scored a total of 70 points, following Lakin with 77, and received a second place plaque out of 16 teams.

The girls placed third with a team total of 74 points behind second place Lakin with 79 and first place Conway Springs with 83.

"Today marks a day that our athletes exceeded all of my expectations," Boldt said. "They competed extremely well and held their composure in the difficult times."

The Trojans fared well in the both the boys' and girls' relay teams.

Five of the six teams qualified for state. The boys' 4x400 came in fifth place and did not qualify.

"I have to give credit to Mike Jilka, (assistant coach), for getting these sprint relays ready for this regional competition," Boldt said.

All three of the girls' relay teams will advance to state.

"The girls ran well," Boldt said, "but the truth is we can run better in the 4x800 and the 4x100."

Individual highlights of the meet for the girls were seniors, Andrea Peachey, who placed first in the 100-meter hurdles with a 15.2 time and Shannon Kroeker who placed first in the high jump with a 5'2" jump. Kroeker also qualified for state by finishing third in the 800-meter run with a 2:28.50 time.

Junior Alisa Jost placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:2.60.

Freshman Charity Davis placed fourth with a 16'1.25" leap in the long jump. Senior Trista Hanley placed fourth in shot put with a 35'5.75". Sophomore Mindy Munguya placed fourth in the triple jump with a 33'6.75" jump.

Individually, the boys were led by sophomore Aaron Yoder, who won both the 800 and 1600-meter runs.

"He simply peaked at the perfect time," said Boldt. "He technically ran two perfect races."

Brother Daniel Yoder, a sophomore, qualified for state in the 800, as well, claiming a third place finish. Daniel also qualified the pole vault by clearing 12'6".

Junior brother Alan Yoder placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.90

Senior Sheldon Funk won the pole vault competition with a 14'6" jump.

"I know Sheldon has looked forward to this regional," said Boldt. "He competes at an extremely high level and anticipated this day all year."

"Again, we are fortunate to qualify so many individuals," he said.

The Trojans will compete at state competition starting at 3 p.m. on Friday and at 11:10 a.m. on Saturday.
