Trojans stumble against Lyons
When the Trojan girls' basketball team defeated Lyons in the Lions' den a month ago, they knew there would be a rematch. The Lions came to town on Tuesday with payback in mind, and they got it with a 38-30 victory.
Hillsboro scored first and maintained the lead until Lyons tied the game at 19-all with less that three minutes left in the half. The Lions were up two when Sara Hamm hit a three-pointer, and Hillsboro took a 22-21 lead into the locker room at half time.
"We had a good first half, both offensively and defensively," said coach Becky Carlson. "We struggled offensively in the second half and missed some baskets we should have made."
Lyons took the lead 25-24 in the third quarter, and although Hillsboro got close, they never tied or led the game again. With 1:15 left, Lyons led by four, 34-30, and the Trojans were still a threat. But the Lions made four free throws in the last 36 seconds.
The Lions can shoot free throws, and they proved it in Brown Gym, making 20 of 23 with 15 of those in the second half. The Trojans were four of six at the line.
"We played good defense the second half," Carlson said. "The difference was Lyons made their shots and their free throws. We didn't get to the line, and we missed some shots."
Lyons' Andrea Leiker led all players with 16 points, including 12 of 13 free throws. Hannah Marsh led Hillsboro with 11 points, including three three-pointers.
Hillsboro, 9-6, travels to Sterling on Friday. Game time is 5 p.m.
