Trojans take third at home tournament

Hillsboro High School volleyball team ran into a familiar foe in the first round Saturday at the Trojan invitational.

For the ninth time in the past two seasons, HHS defeated Marion High School.

This time the Trojans had to work a little harder after losing the first game 25-19.

They bounced back with victory in game two, and then took the match with a hard-fought 27-25 game-three victory.

The second round was easier for Hillsboro as it defeated Herington 25-17, 25-21.

The third round of pool play was for a number-one seed in bracket play.

The Trojans ran into a hot Hoisington Cardinal team, falling in the first game 25-16.

But HHS jumped out to a 9-1 lead in game two, en route to a 25-15 thumping.

Game three was close, but went to the energetic Cardinals, 25-21.

The loss meant HHS would have to face 25-0 Conway Springs in the semi-finals.

The Cardinals played as well as their record stated, defeating the Trojans 25-11, 25-15.

HHS bounced back in the third-place game, with a three-game victory against Minneapolis, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15.

The Mid-Central Activities Association champ Trojans will play Saturday in the sub-state tournament at Hoisington.

Three victories in the single-elimination tournament would give HHS a second straight trip to the state tournament.
