Trojans upended by Wichita Collegiate

The Trojan girls' basketball team ended a five-game winning streak Tuesday, losing to Wichita Collegiate 38-26.

The Trojans played a good defensive game, handled Collegiate's press, and did everything they could — except score.

"We had great looks in the first half," said head coach Becky Carlson. "We held Collegiate to 38 points and stopped the easy transition baskets. We just could not score."

According to Carlson, Tuesday's game was the best defensive game the Trojans have played this season.

"We're playing well," she said. "We just need to take what we do now and get better."

The Trojans were 25 percent in field goals against Collegiate and 50 percent in free throw shooting.

Sophomore JuliAnne Chisholm led the team with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Senior Amy Duerksen had six points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Hannah Marsh had five points, and sophomore Megan Peachey scored three.

The Trojans travel Friday to Ellinwood. They play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Smoky Valley and play Hoisington Tuesday at home.

Last Friday, Hillsboro defeated Haven 51-41 with a good, balanced scoring attack.

"We struggled scoring except from the free throw line," Carlson said. "Haven played us tough, but we executed our offense and fast break well."

Haven tried to slow the game down on the Trojans, but the patient Trojans prevailed. The Trojans made 31 percent of their field goals and almost 70 percent of their free throws.

At the end of three quarters, Hillsboro led 28-24. The Trojans used a 23-17 fourth quarter to put the Panthers away.

Duerksen led the team with 12 points. Marsh scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds. Chisholm had 11 points and nine rebounds. Peachey scored eight points; Emily Ratzlaff, five; and Audrey Weinbrenner, four.
