Turkey Tournament draws 55 bowlers years ago
Fifty-five men and women bowlers from around the state competed for cash prizes Saturday and Sunday at the Turkey Tournament at Trail Lanes Bowling Center in Hillsboro.
The highest score of the weekend was a perfect 300 rolled by Marie Kessler of Lehigh.
The tournament was sponsored by the Hillsboro Trailettes Women's Bowling League, who hope to make it an annual event the first week of November.
The event was a Nine-Pin-No-Tap tournament. There were 11 five-member teams entered in the event. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three teams.
Achievement prizes, donated by local businesses, were awarded during the event as they were earned.
First place, earning $75, was Team Miller, consisting of Curly and Nancy Miller, Peabody; Debbie and Larry Blanding, Beloit; and Marie Kessler, Lehigh; with a total team score of 2,672. Kessler rolled a perfect 300 game, 238, and 178 for a 716 series.
Second place honors, earning $50, went to Team Kessler, consisting of Lynn Kessler, Lehigh; Chad Heuback, Salina; Melanie and Rick Reed, McPherson; and Nicole Suderman, Hillsboro; with a total score of 2,521. Suderman led the team with games of 167, 256, and 218 for a 641 series. Rick Reed had scores of 252, 183 and 193 for a 628 series.
Third place, earning $25, was The Treehouse 5, consisting of Brenda Kimberly, Hillsboro; Brenda Reimer, Marion; Barry Allen, Marion; Merlin and Penni Funk, Hillsboro; with a total score of 2,520. Allen led the team with 183, 188, and 197 games for a 568 series. He was followed closely by Penni Funk with games of 215, 181, and 170 for a 566 series. Kimberly scored games of 175, 154, and 191 for a 520 series.
The remaining standings: fourth place: The Trailers, 2488; fifth: Lucky Five, 2,472; sixth: Real Estate Center, 2,397; a tie for seventh: Guys 2 Gals, 2,323 and Anybody's Guess, 2,323; ninth: Trail Lanes, 2,275; 10th: The Ya Ya Sisters, 2,039; and 11th: Uphill Team, 1,982.
There were a total of 16 500 series bowled; four 600 series, including one bowled by Josh Ens, Hillsboro, of team Trail Lanes, with games of 242, 158, and 212 for a 612, and one bowled by Eugene West, Durham, of team Real Estate Center, who rolled a 602 series with games of 164, 220, and 218. There was one 700 series rolled during the event.
