Vandals shoot out lights of Goessel sign
After a five minute executive session at its regular monthly meeting, the Goessel City Council voted that the 1.5 percent wage increase given to city workers in December 2002 will remain with no additional increase in 2003.
The council approved the installation of a vinyl fence with a six foot opening for bushes every 16 feet beginning with the tennis court fence and extending to the south edge of the park.
The council approved the purchase of two cases of mosquito control chemicals from Van Diest Supply.
Jan Nolde of Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk and Loyd read over the management letter starting with prior year points revisited and then recommendations for 2002. Under the policies and procedures section of the report, it was noted that the city does not have a written policies and procedures manual and recommended that the city develop one. Nolde informed the council that her firm would be willing to provide a quote for helping to develop a manual.
Arlen Goertzen, public works director, reported on vandalism to the Goessel sign; all four lights were shot out. The sheriff's report will be sent to the insurance provider. Goertzen requested and the council approved the purchase of two cases of mosquito control chemicals.
The council approved the purchase of 10 chairs for the community room. Arlen Goertzen is checking into purchasing a picnic for the patio of the civic center and some playground equipment for behind the center.
Laura Daily, Goessel city librarian, requested permission for the teens' summer reading group to hold a car wash on the parking lot in July. The council approved her request.
The council discussed a letter Mayor Peggy Jay received from Harry Weelborg, vice president/general manager of the Moundridge Phone Company. The letter was in regard to the city's franchise ordinance.
This year the city is allowing fireworks within the city limits by permit only. The deadline for obtaining a permit is July 1 to allow time for the police and fire department to review the permits. Only Goessel residents will be issued permits.
The council approved making an offer for the 30-foot strip of land on the west edge of the Joyful Noise property to be used for a street right of way.
The water tower is finished, and the council discussed the possibility of having an open house and ribbon cutting. No date was set.
The council also discussed paying to have a Web site designed. James Wiens will report on prices at the next meeting.
