Veteran's Day

Take it from one who's been there, Veterans' Day is a holiday well worthy of public support. Flags should be flown, programs held, and the public pause to honor living veterans as well as those who are no longer around.

No person in his/her right mind could minimize the importance of honoring veterans. They are the people who put their lives on the line for world freedom, both today and yesterday.

Make a stretch effort to do them justice on this national holiday. Don't just fly the flag and go fishing, make an effort to do something constructive. Thank a veteran, and mean it. Don't just make a cursory remark about patriotism, let veterans know how grateful you are that they made the effort.

Also remember that Veterans' Day is a day to honor veterans, not a day to be critical of those who fled to Canada, stayed out of service for religious purposes, a job at Boeing, or to work on the family farm.

Make it a positive holiday. Don't cheapen what the veterans did by opening old wounds. Let them heal. That's what the veterans fought for, personal liberty.
